Orangutan the man of the forest

Kalimantan
Orangutan
Tell Orangutan and everyone knows what it is. Sometimes it is written as an orangutan. Orangutan means "man of the forest", derived from the Malay language. These red monkeys are found only in Indonesia and Malaysia, on the island of Borneo and Sumatra.

They belong to the big monkey family. The other members of the apes are gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and humans. In fact, we share about 96% of our genetic clusters with these red monkeys. The most obvious difference between a monkey and a monkey is that monkeys have no tail.

There are two types of orangutans, that is. I put Pygmaeus (the species Borneon) and Pongo abelii (the species Sumatra). The species Bornonia is divided into 3 subspecies: Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus, Pongo pygmaeus morio and Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii.

Sumatrans is threatened with extinction, while those of Bornon are classified as threatened with extinction. Physically, the Borneon Orangutan is much more robust and has a darker red coat. He has a big hanging neck bag and a round face with flames. Sumatran orangutan has light brown fur, flat eyelashes and more fur.

Its habitat, the rainforest, is steeped in agriculture, forest products and other developments. They are sometimes hunted by those who consider them a disease. Forest fires are extremely threatening, especially for Sumatrans.

They are loners and the biggest tree animals (living trees) of this planet. With his strong hands and feet and flexible limbs, he helps them to travel through the forest.

These monkeys are frugivor (eat fruits). Although 90% of the main food consists of fruits (figs, durian), they also eat honey, bark, leaves and insects.

In the wild they can live up to 45 years or more. Life can take longer at the zoo. A man can weigh about 120 kg and reach a height of 1.5 meters, while a woman measures about 1 meter and weighs 45 kg.

A mature man can develop constraints on the cheeks and neck. They will inflate their neck bag to make a long and loud call to alert their own species or attract their females.

Orangutans get their first baby between 14 and 15 years. The pregnancy lasts 8.5 months. The boys remain with the mother until the age of 7 or 8 years. Usually a woman gets babies every 8 years. In your life you have to have 3 or 4 teenagers.

Other interesting behaviors: Build a new nest every night, protect yourself from rain by covering your head with large leaves. When angry, they make a kissing sound. It has been observed that Wilde use tools, e.g. B. cut off the branch of a tree and use as a branch for extracting termites for food purposes.

In the Tanjung Puting National Park, in the center of Kalimantan (Borneo, Indonesia), Camp Leakey conducts a study and rehabilitates orangutans and other primates. In Borneo, Malaysia, the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center in Sabah and the Semengoh Conservation Center in Sarawak do the same to save the orangutan from a forest. In both centers, visitors can see them during the meal and learn about initiatives taken to protect these species. There are also non-governmental organizations specializing in the conservation of orangutan on the island of Borneo.

The populations are estimated as follows:
1) Sumatra: 6,600 people only in the northern part of Sumatra, within the Leuser ecosystem.
2) Borneo: 31,000 inhabitants in the center of Borneo, the largest population of the island of Borneo. 7,400 people in northwestern Borneo (south of Sarawak and West Kalimantan); 4,800 people in East Kalimantan and 11,000 in northeastern Borneo (Sabah and East Kalimantan).
